After a 10 hour flight from Sydney to Bangkok, arriving at 5pm, we had an 8 hour wait before our next 10 hour Bangkok to Athens leg. That's right leaving Bangkok at 1am.
Sounds ungodly, it is.
We thought we'd be smart and book into the hotel inside the airport which sold rooms for 4 hours so you could have a sleep and a shower and feel refreshed before joining the next flight. Good idea in theory.
It all started perfectly. We found the hotel (Louis' Tavern Day Rooms) after a 40 minute walk through the airport terminal. It reminded me of the movie I had just seen on the plane called 'The Way Back' where a group of gulag escapees walk 4000 km from Russia to India.
We booked in. Paid the $80 to the polite receptionist and got our key. We were reminded that if we went overtime it would be an additional 4-hour fee. The room was functional if a little small. Twin beds and a lounge and room for a small cat swing. Bathroom in the corner. Next to the bed was a heavy curtain. When we looked behind our curtain we were surprised to see people walking past only a few feet on the other side of the glass.
I had my shower. I unpacked my bags. I set my iPod alarm. Michelle suggested setting her phone alarm as well, I think I let out a small guffaw. I told her there was no need as I did not feel sleepy (famous last words). We both lay down and went to sleep. A very sound deep sleep, the type of sleep you fall into after watching 4 movies on a tiny screen 20cm in front of your face.
It is an unpleasant experience to be jolted out of slumber by a strange loud phone ring in a dark hotel room. The receptionist muttered something which could have been in Thai but was probably English.
We scrambled. Still half asleep and tired we both gathered our scattered belonging and threw them into the bags. The receptionist took pity, I guess she has seen it all before.
